What is fissure sealing and when should it be done?
It is a preventive procedure that protects chewing teeth from caries. The doctor fills the deep natural grooves (fissures) on the tooth with a special material. The surface becomes smooth, food debris does not get trapped, and the risk of caries is significantly reduced. It should be performed immediately after the complete eruption of the permanent chewing teeth.
From what age can fissure sealing be done?
Timing of the procedure depends on when the permanent teeth erupt, not the child’s age.. The first permanent molars ("sixes") are sealed at the age of 6–8 years, and the second molars ("sevens") and premolars at 11–13 years to provide early protection.
Is it mandatory to seal all molars?
The decision is made by the doctor after an examination. Sealing is indicated for teeth with deep, narrow fissures that are difficult to clean with a brush. If the fissures are wide and shallow, and the risk of caries is low, the procedure may not be needed. We are guided by the principle of expediency.
Is this procedure painful?
No, the procedure is absolutely painless and does not require anesthesia. It does not involve tooth preparation (drilling). The doctor only thoroughly cleans the surface and applies the sealant. It is quick, comfortable, and fear-free for the child.
How long does the sealant last?
