What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are specialized dental structures that cover a tooth from all sides like a cap. Essentially, a dental crown is a non removable prosthesis. It is placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, and outward appearance. It completely encompasses the visible portion of the tooth, thereby restoring chewing function and the aesthetics of the dental row, while also protecting the tooth from further destruction such as decay, chips, or infections. In other words, it is a cap that allows a severely damaged or weakened tooth to be saved instead of being extracted.
What is a Dental Crown? The difference between "crown" and "crowns
A common question we hear is: “What is a dental crown, and is there a difference between the terms ‘crown’ and ‘crowns’?” In reality, the only difference is the number. A dental crown refers to a single artificial restoration, while crowns is the plural form, referring to multiple restorations or the general method of prosthetics. For instance, during a consultation, your dentist may recommend a single crown or several if multiple teeth are damaged. Regardless of the number, their purpose remains the same: to restore the tooth’s function and appearance.

When should you get a dental crown? We at ELITES recommend this solution if a tooth is significantly damaged or weakened. For example, indications include: more than 50% of the tooth crown is destroyed by caries, the tooth became brittle after root canal treatment, the tooth is cracked or broke, chewing surfaces are worn down, restoration after implantation, in such situations, it helps save the tooth and restore its function and appearance.
The installation procedure consists of several stages. Initially, an examination is performed and, if necessary, treatment (e.g., caries treatment or canal filling). Next, the dentist prepares (shapes) the tooth—removes a layer of hard tissue to make space. The next step is taking impressions or 3D scanning, according to which the dental technician will manufacture an individual product. For this period, a temporary plastic crown is installed to protect the tooth. After a few days or weeks, the finished permanent product is fitted and fixed with special dental cement. The entire procedure is painless, as it is performed under local anesthesia. The patient may feel only slight discomfort during shaping. If the tooth has already had a root canal (no nerve), there will be no pain at all. Modern restorations are made very accurately in shape, size, and color. For front teeth, the dentist will select a shade that perfectly matches your natural teeth. Experts recommend ceramic or zirconia for front teeth, as they look as natural as possible (metal-based ones are not recommended for front teeth due to their appearance).
Dental crown price
Patients are always interested in how much a dental crown costs. The price depends on several factors: the material, complexity of preparation, and the need for additional procedures (e.g., treatment, placement of a post or implant). The cost is also influenced by the clinic’s level, the doctor’s experience, and the city where you are treated. In Lviv, the price is usually more affordable than in the capital, but it varies between clinics.
On average in Ukraine, prices start from ~3,000–4,000 UAH for porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) and can reach 10,000–15,000 UAH for modern metal-free structures. A standard PFM crown costs about 3,000 UAH, while high-quality zirconia is about 6,500–7,000 UAH per unit.
